China has identified a new tick-borne virus

A new and mysterious virus, transmitted by ticks, has emerged in northeastern China, raising concerns among scientists and public health experts alike. Known as the Xue-Cheng virus (XCV), this discovery marks a significant advancement in understanding the risks posed by tickborne pathogens. The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, highlight XCV’s genetic uniqueness and its potential implications for public health. Discovering the Xue-Cheng Virus Researchers at Mudanjiang Forestry Central Hospital and the State Key Laboratory of Pathogen and Biosecurity identified XCV through metatranscriptomic sequencing of serum samples from 252 patients who presented with fever and a history of tick bites during the summer of 2023. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that XCV belongs to the orthonairovirus genus of the Nairoviridae family, sharing less than 75.6% amino acid identity in its RNA-dependent RNA polymerase protein with known members of the genus.
