Global outbreak update: Key infectious disease events (13th July 2026)

Ebola virus disease (Bundibugyo, DRC) The Ebola outbreak due to the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to expand and is currently the most significant acute hemorrhagic fever emergency globally. WHO reports 1,406–1,460 confirmed cases and 438–452 deaths as of 1 July 2026, with roughly 38 new confirmed cases per day over the previous two weeks, indicating sustained transmission rather than decline. Response measures include intensified case finding, contact tracing across affected provinces, deployment of investigational therapeutics under a clinical trial, and emergency use listing of a molecular assay for Bundibugyo virus. Marburg virus disease The most recently tracked Marburg virus disease outbreak, in Ethiopia, was declared over on 26 January 2026, with 14 confirmed cases and 9 deaths; no new cases have been reported since, and ECDC similarly notes no further Marburg detections as of late January 2026.
