Measles outbreak in the USA: Update

As of July 9, 2025, the United States is experiencing its largest measles outbreak in decades, with 1,288 confirmed cases reported across 39 states and jurisdictions. The outbreak is particularly severe in Texas and New Mexico, with significant clusters also reported in Oklahoma and Kansas. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified 27 outbreaks this year, a sharp increase from 16 in 2024. Most cases (88%) are outbreak-associated, meaning they are linked to clusters of three or more related cases. Three deaths have been confirmed in the U.S. in 2025 due to measles. Most cases occur in unvaccinated or unknown-status individuals, highlighting the need for the MMR vaccine. Hospitalizations and severe complications have occurred, especially among young children and the unvaccinated. Texas: The outbreak began in late January in Gaines County and rapidly spread to neighboring counties, with at least 400 individuals affected in Texas alone.
