ViVa 34– Global outbreak status (27th August 2026)

Global outbreak status Cholera — multi-country. Cholera remains active globally and has worsened in the latest WHO update: 29,610 cholera/acute watery diarrhea cases and 271 deaths were reported from 16 countries or territories across four WHO regions during May 2026, a 43% monthly increase in cases and a 30% increase in deaths. The Eastern Mediterranean Region reported the most cases, followed by Africa; WHO reported no cases in Europe or the Western Pacific during that reporting period. Control priorities remain surveillance, rapid case management, safe water and sanitation, hygiene measures, targeted oral cholera vaccination, and reliable supplies.  Mpox — multi-country, with continuing African transmission. Mpox remains active, although the latest WHO reporting described declines in four regions during March 2026 (Americas, Africa, Europe, and South-East Asia), alongside increases in the Eastern Mediterranean and Western Pacific regions.
